True Cost of Fashion

A single t-shirt takes around 700 gallons of water to produce (equivalent to 2.5 years of water an average person drinks), chemicals in colour dyes get leaked into water streams, billion pounds of textile waste every year go to landfills in United States alone coupled with poor conditions in factories dotted across developing countries, the true cost of fashion is undoubtedly hard to measure but inevitably unsustainable.

Closer to home, the only landfill in Singapore, the Semakau island, is estimated to be running at full capacity by 2035 if we continue at this rate of discarding waste. In the clothes we wear, synthetic plastic fibres such as polyester releases microplastics with every wash and these fibres run the risk of marine pollution.

The choice of the consumer is tangible and we need to rethink the impact of our fashion decisions.

We still love fashion, it gives us the voice visually but let us be the reformed shopper that supports the survival of our planet by not creating “new”.

Sustainability

We all have that closet-bursting and yet have “nothing to wear” moments, with most preloved apparels sitting nicely in almost new condition. How about getting these oldies but goodies out to those who will give them a second lease of life?

Here at second other, the core of our mission is to promote an ecosystem where sustainable fashion can take place. By not creating ‘new’ clothes and using what has already been created, is in fact the most sustainable option. We are here to change a mindset, a lifestyle, for more people to embark on the secondhand journey by choosing “used” first.

The most sustainable way is to use what we already have.

What We Do

second other is a service provider for the consignment of fashion apparels with the mission of promoting fashion sustainability and giving preloved a chance at being marketed like it is new. We are also platform agnostic as we believe in getting the end result, not where the sale is made.

Our main focus is to extend the life of like-new apparels by providing a match between buyers and sellers. We want to keep as much clothes in circulation before it ends up incinerated and we hope to create a community of sellers and buyers who are supporters of the circular economy.

In the consumerism economy we are in where we are served with endless ads to promote buying, coupled with the rise of fast fashion that makes buying new affordable, we are faced with more sellers than buyers (truth be told). We want to balance the scale thus for every purchase you made with us, you can unlock 20 items to be consigned. We believe that choosing reuse can be nurtured. We know as we are also reformed shopaholics.

Choose used, choose our planet.
